If anyone in the ATL doubts DAX’s connection with Big Boi and the whole Dungeon Family then part one of this to be continued series will put all those doubts to rest. Anyone who knows me, knows me I am a huge Big Boi fan, and have been bumping Southerplayerlisticcadillacfunkymusic since I drove down from Iowa in 01′. Everything I have wanted to do with music is happening and I feel like this is not real. The whole motivation behind these videos is to tell real stories. Big is a man of music and he keeps his world at Stankonia very protected. When you step into his world you have to respect the history bleeding through the walls. The new album is Bananas! Just shot the album packaging for Hurricanes yet to be released “Unleashed”. Between set-ups I asked if he could bless us with something off the dome. I promise you this was not a written. Look out for his mixtape with Little Boosie, gangster shit I promise you that.
Zoe hit #1 on the Billboard rap charts two weeks ago. Flicks shot by yours truly. We worked for 21 hours and did 30 set-ups for the package art. Yeah, Zoe and I put in work. Go put in some work yourself and support some ATL crunk street flavor…
Last friday I taught my first class at the portfolio center: “how to not get robbed in Bankhead while shooting rappers” no really the class is called: Location Lighting with Zach Wolfe. My students claim they had never been taught lighting before, hmmmmm. Sounds like going to piano school without the keys, anyways… We talked for about 15 minutes till I had enough with that talking bullshit, I told them to get off their asses and grab theirs cams and lets go shoot. Lets put it this way, if they keep me around and you want to learn photography, lighting and all sign up at www.portfoliocenter.com. They claim its the best photo school in the southeast, if I teach there it would have to be, i kid, i kid…
I did a photo shoot with my good friends the Black Lips a couple months back. This flick made the cover of “The Real Detroit Weekly” Props to my boy Jeremy Deputat on the fresh design. If you are not familiar with the Black Lips then get out from under your couch and go cop “200 Million Thousand” on VICE records. Look for the track “Drugs” Buuuuudy that song makes me feel all tingly inside. And speaking of Detroit, they are quietly making the dopest hip-hop on the planet right now. I say quietly cause only the “backpackers” have really embraced these amazing artists: Black Milk, Illa J ( J Dilla’s Bro ) Guilty Simpson, Elzhi, Slum Village, Royce Da 5′9, Trick Trick ( hardest dude in hip-hop, trust me ) and the list goes on. I put together a time-lapse of the XXL TI cover i did one year ago. Tip had just been released from house arrest. The idea behind this set-up was to have Tip tell the people through his words that the KING was back. It also was supposed to help tell the story of him writing lyrics on paper for the first time, aka “Paper Trail” The shot with lyrics behind my blog is Tips lyric book ( I am pretty sure those are the first flicks of that book ) Many people thought XXL photoshopped the words for the cover, but it all happened in camera.
